Angry over the lack of progress in the investigation, Mildred rents three abandoned billboards near her home, and posts on them: "Raped While Dying", "Still No Arrests?", and "How Come, Chief Willoughby?" The billboards upset the townspeople, including Chief Bill Willoughby and the racist, violent, alcoholic Officer Jason Dixon. The open secret that Willoughby suffers from terminal pancreatic cancer adds to everyone's disapproval. Mildred and her son Robbie are harassed and threatened, but to Robbie's chagrin, she stays firm about keeping the billboards up. While Willoughby is sympathetic to Mildred's frustration, he finds the billboards an unfair attack on his character. Angered by Mildred's lack of respect for his authority, Dixon threatens businessman Red Welby, who rented Mildred the billboards, and he arrests her friend and coworker, Denise, on trivial marijuana possession charges. I've been a fan of McDonagh since I played Tupolski in a school production of his play The Pillowman. This film is a manifestation of McDonaghs dark and twisted style of comedy and it's this style that helps captivate an audience with both developed and deep characters. Accounting schools in missouri. I don't understand the critical acclaim,aside from McDormand's and Harrelson's usual excellence. Why would i enjoy a movie full of dumb asses? A very nice movie with lots of unexpected twists and actions. Good dialogue, really good acting and a captivating story. In my opinion this is one of the most graceful movies that I've seen so far. Everything seems so smooth, like a masterpiece.
(I have seen that it is listed also as a comedy, but I don't exactly remember having any laughs. Maybe just one. But it might be because of the intensity of the story that almost hypnotized me throughout the whole movie.)
The only regret that I have about this film is that it ended.
